Who is the Mashiach?

Question submitted to Ask the Rabbi” by:

Name: Joanne

City: Hemel Hempstead, England

Full Question:

“All the way through the Old Testament, the Jews are awaiting  the arrival of a Messiah. Then Jesus arrives, performs miracles, etc. and many Jews follow him. Why did the rabbis not accept Jesus as the one that they had been waiting for and advise their people to all follow him?”

Rabbi Tully Bryks responds:

You are correct that we have waited long and hard for the Mashiach (Messiah) to come. His coming is a basic tenant of Jewish faith! There are several reasons why we are still waiting and the vast majority of Jews never accepted Jesus as the Mashiach. Here are just a handful:

  1. The Torah (Bible) and the Navi (Prophets) describe many rules for how to evaluate a prophet. One of the key rules for the Mashiach (and any prophet) is that he may not change any law of the Torah. Even if he changes just one law, regardless of how many miracles he may have performed, we are not allowed to follow him/her.
  2. The prophesies describing the Mashiach state clearly that the Mashiach would bring the final redemption, including a utopian society with total peace for all people and even animals, whereby “Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall man learn war anymore” and “the lion will lie down with the lamb.” Unfortunately, the past two thousand years have been plagued by constant violence, war and even attempts at genocide.sword into plowshares
  3. Aside from bringing about world peace, the Mashiach will also bring about the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdah (Holy Temple). Yet, the 2nd Beis Hamikdash had not even been destroyed by the Romans until 35-40 years after they killed Jesus. So his arrival was a little too early to be considered the Mashiach.
  4. Along those lines, the prophets go on to say that the Mashiach will gather all of the Jews back to the land of Israel. It took around 1,900 years since the death of Jesus for the Jews to finally have a state again in Israel. And even today, the majority of Jews still do not live in Israel.
  5. The prophesies also state that when the Mashiach comes, “all of the nations will worship the one true G-d,” bringing unity to the world. However, not only do the nations still lack unity in their faith of G-d, there are thousands (perhaps millions) of people who believe in multiple G-d’s or no G-d at all!
  6. The prophesies further state that when the Mashiach comes, prophecy will return. Today, the only people claiming to be prophets are typically the ones found in insane asylums.
  7. The prophesies further state the Mashiach would be a direct descendant, on the father’s side, from Kind David. For those who believe that Jesus did not have a father, then this would be impossible.

There are many other reasons as well, although even one reason would be enough. That being said, It is important to note that the Jewish rejection of Jesus as the Mashiach is not a rejection of the Christian people. On the contrary, we believe that all people are the children of G-d and we do not solicit converts. For more on this concept, please see my article on the Chosen Nation.

  1. So my jew friend…
    as you see…
is not possible for a human being…to be The Christ…The King of Israel…Sitting on The Holy Throne of The Holy Kingdom of God…!!!

God has promised to Abraham…to give to his sons…the Promised Land…
This Promise has been fulfilled in the time of Joshua the son of Nun…
Before this…God has done with the israelites…A Convenant – The Old Testament…through the prophet Moses – who was a very big believer of God…
in the time of prophet Moses …The Presence of God Was VERY STRONG…
nevertheless…God has punished Moses just for one sin…
that means…prophet Moses was not worthy to be The Christ – The King of Israel…
    not only this…
but God has deprived to Moses to come into the Promised Land…just for one sin…!!!

God gave them the Promised Land…
    but not so simple…
before to give them the Promised Land…
has done a Holy Convenant…The Convenant of The Holy Law of God…
according to This Holy Convenant…the israelites should obey to His Holy Law…
    if not…
God made them clear…that…should punish them…!!!
The unbelievers of the nation of Israel…
they understood…that they were in a big problem…
they could not be a nation like the other nations…
they could not do…what they wanted to do…
they were not free to do what they want…
they could not live with sins…like the other nations…!!!

    THESE ARE…
THE BIG TEACHINGS OF THE HOLY LAW OF GOD…
    ”you will love God…
you will love thy neighbor as thyself…
    and dont do sins…!!!”

If the sin was not havy…
was given the ability of forgiveness…through the bood of animals…
if the sin was havy…there was no forgiveness…was punishment of death…!!!

The only way to live the israelites in the Promise Land…
    was…
to obey To God and to His Holy Law…!!!

    QUESTION
Who has obeyed exactly to The Holy Law…???
    i answer…NOBODY…
    nobody was sinless…
even THE BIG PROPHET MOSES…even THE BIG KING DAVID…
although THE PRESENCE OF GOD WAS STRONG in their time…!!!

    By the time…
    the israelites and their kings…
proved themselves…unworthy to keep the Promised Land…
because of their sins.and their apostacy…
God didn’t saved them from their enemies…!!!

    NOW ANOTHER QUESTION…
Who is the bigger enemy of the human being…???
the enemy of my country…or the enemy of my eternal life…???

The israelites lost their country because of the sins…

but…there is THE BIGGEST ENEMY for all human beings…

THIS BIGGEST ENEMY for all humanity is THE DEATH

the israelites…and all nations…they lost the eternal life…
because of the sin of Adam in Paradise…!!!

    Through our father Adam…
we have lost the eternal life…we die…!!!

To give God…a promised Land… for me and for my sons…
even if my sons they will stay always in Belief…
    is should be USELESS…
    because…
i will die…and my sons will die…every generation will die…
    that means…
THE BIG ENEMY namely THE DEATH
    will be…UNBEATEN ENEMY…
    will be…the king of death…
and i and my sons…we will be the slaves of this king…!!!

But we believe and we know that…
    GOD IS GOOD….GOD IS LOVE…
    GOD HAS…AND IS…THE EVERLASTING LIFE…GOD IS IMMORTAL…
    GOD HAS created us…
    and for sure…
    IS…
    TO HIS HAND…TO HIS WILL…TO HIS ABILITY…
    TO GIVE US EVERLASTING LIFE….!!!

    So…as a believer…i should say to God…

    ”God…You Are Love…You Are Good…You Are Almighty God…
    please…
give us everlasting life…make us to not die…
    destroy please…this BIG ENEMY = THE DEATH…
please make us free…from this BIG ENEMY = THE DEATH…!!!

THIS IS THE GIFT OF GOD to us…my jew friend…
    THROUGH THE NEW TESTAMENT…!!!

God created the human being in the beginning…created Adam and Eva…
    GOD WHO IS LOVE…
wants CERTAINLY…to give us everlasting life…
God knew that the man…the human being…who has free will…
must learn to stay in Belief…must learn to obey to God…
    God knew from the beginning…
    that…the man…
is not really willing to obey to God…

    and so…
    God started from the beginning…
HIS BIG SCHOOL for the human being…
    started from the Paradise….

God made His First Old Convenant with Adam…
    Adam didn’t obey…

    after…
God has made The next Old Convenant with Noah and his sons…
the sons of Noah didn’t obey…

    after…
God made The Next Old Convenant with Abraham and his son…through Moses…
    the israelites didn’t obey…

    finally
God did The Last Convenant with the sons of Abraham…
    with the israelites…
and not only with the israelites….
    but with all nations…
according to His Promise to Abraham…
”In your seed will all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” Gen.22.18

God did THE NEW TESTAMENT…THROUGH HIS SON – WHO IS…JESUS of Nazareth…!!!

    Through New Testament…
the human being…become free from the biggest enemy namely from the death…
    Through New Testament…
God will give to the believers…
THE NEW PROMISED LAND = THE NEW EARTH…AND NEW HEAVENS…

“For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former things shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
    ISAIAH 65.17

25 Of old, you laid the foundation of the earth. The heavens are the work of your hands.
26 They will perish, but you will endure. Yes, all of them will wear out like a garment. You will change them like a cloak, and they will be changed.
    PSALMS 102

    Through New Testament…
    God gives to the believers…
FORGIVENESS FOR ALL SINS even for HAVY ONES…
    and…EVERLASTING LIFE…!!!

    QUESTION
Who could save us from the bIggest enemy = THE DEATH…???

    could save us…a man…a human being…???

    IMPOSSIBLE…!!!
    Because…
there is no man with out sin…everybody is sinfull…
    everybody is son of Adam…
    and…
    inevitably…
is ill…with the illness of sin…
his body is body of Adam…and the body of Adam became sinfull…
everybody in Front of HOLY GOD is sinfull…
    even the BIG BELIEVERS… MOSES…DAVID…!!!
    Everybody…every human being…
has inherited from his father Adam…
    sin…and death…is mortable…!!!

    • As you can probably guess, Judaism disagrees with mush of what you are wrote above. But we certainly respect your right to your opinions and there is more than unites us than divides us! Judaism does not require conversion to be saved. We believe that we are all G-d’s children. For more on that topic, please see my article on the Chosen Nation – http://rabbiwithanswers.com/chosen-nation/
With regard to your question in the futility in longing for a human Mashiach (Messiah), despite the sins of many of the former Jewish kings, here’s a very brief answer:
Since we love G-d and fully trust Him, we believe in, and accept, His many prophecies which discuss the utopian life in Messianic times, despite the fact that we are human and our leaders are human. So if G-d thinks (aka knows) that everything is going to work out with our future human Messianic king, than I will defer to His judgment (and knowledge of the future).

  4. This article helped me evaluate a book I read that presumes to prove that Jesus was the Messiah.

    • I’m so happy that I was able to help!
Steve and I have continued our conversation offline and it is important to realize that both Christians and Jews should be proud of their convictions. And when it comes values, there is more that unites us than divides us. Especially in today’s turbulent times, I think it is important that we focus on our shared values and beliefs.

    • Nope I am the messiah I tried to get everyone to make me king and rebuild the temple but they were all hung up on Jesus, sooo I am just going to expel humanity. I hope you enjoy the show!

  5. Hi,

I have some questions reading your article here. But I will just ask one then point some verses out

    Jeremiah 32:37

Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:

Looking at this verse it says I think the jews right? He would bring them back to Isreal which did happen and your point 4 you say all jews but the verse does not say every single jew. Same with Ezekiel 20:34 correct?

Also, please tell me if any of these are wrong because I don’t think they are regarding Jesus

    • Thank you so much for your question/comment Steve!
With regard to the prophesies which you quote in Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah) and Yechezkel (Ezekiel), where the verses say, “I will gather you from among the nations,” they do not say, “only some of you” or “many of you” will be gathered. If I was a Jew living in those times and told that only some of my descendants would eventually be redeemed, it probably wouldn’t be so comforting. On the contrary, one of the many sadistic tricks that Nazis sometimes performed was to ask a father to choose which one of his sons should be killed. The Mashiach is something we pray for every day because it will offer salvation to the whole world! That being said, just as with the Exodus from Egypt, it is possible that not everyone will be worthy of redemption. Even so, those Jews who were not worthy during the Exodus from Egypt were killed during the plague of darkness. But none were left to continue living in Egypt. So too, our understanding is that the final redemption will eventually bring all remaining Jews to Israel.
Regarding the many verses you quote and wonder if they could refer to someone like Jesus, some of them, which apply to many others as well, certainly can. For example, if a verse says that the Mashiach (Messiah) will be a male, Jesus would have met that criteria. That being said, millions of other people would have also met the criteria of being a male (roughly half the population), just as millions of people meet the criteria of being descendants of Avraham (Abraham), Yitzchak (Isaac) and Yaakov (Jacob). Every generation will have someone, sometimes many people, who meet the criteria for being the Mashiach. But once that person dies and the Messianic prophesies have not been fulfilled, it demonstrates unequivocally that this person was not the Mashiach.
But as it turns out, it appears that many of the verses you quote are taken out of context or are outright mistranslations. While I won’t comment on the “new testament,” I would certainly advise anyone looking for clarity, to read the Torah (Bible or Old Testament) in the original Hebrew, as every translation is a commentary, designed to support the perspective of the translator.
Here are just a few blatant examples of how some of these verses should read based on the 3000+-year Jewish tradition, and based on a simple reading of the Hebrew and the context:

“3. Messiah would be born of a virgin. Isaiah 7:14 Matthew 1:22-23
      Luke 1:26-31”
The key word in this verse, עַלְמָה (pronounced alma) has always meant a young woman, and certainly not a virgin. If the Torah wanted to indicate virgin, it would have used the Hebrew word for virgin בְּתּוּלָה (pronounced Betulah) as it does when it actually refers to a virgin. For example, see Breishis (Genesis) 24:16, “the girl was very beautiful, a virgin (בְּתּוּלָה), and no man had had any relations with her.” Unlike the beliefs of the 1st century pagans who regularly espoused the idea of mortals being impregnated by gods, Judaism has never accepted such concepts.
Furthermore, Yishayahu 7:14 is not even talking about the Mashiach. Rather, the context is that Yishayahu had come to warn King Achaz that the northern kingdom had formed an alliance with King Rezin of Aram (Syria) to wage war against Jerusalem. In 7:4, Yishayahu tells King Achaz that he should not be afraid because G-d will be with him and the invasion with fail. In 7:8, he further states that within 65 years, the northern kingdom will cease to exist and its 10 tribes would be led into exile by Assyria. When King Achaz expresses his doubts, Yishayahu offers a sign as described in Yishayahu 7:14, “Therefore, the L-rd Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the young woman (הָעַלְמָה) shall conceive and give birth to a son and she will name him Immanuel.” The young woman was referring to someone who they both knew; otherwise, it would not have been a very effective sign. One Jewish tradition (see Radak) is that “the woman” was Achav’s own wife, making the sign even more impressive, as it even predicted the name he would give his son. But regardless, it is clear that the verse is not referring to the Mashiach and certainly has nothing to do with a virgin birth.

“14 Messiah would be rejected by his own people. Psalm 69:8
      Isaiah 53:3 John 1:11”
On the contrary, we actually believe that the Mashiach will be universally accepted by the Jewish people, which will serve as yet another indicator of the true Mashiach. This is another example of a mistranslation and taking something out of context. In actuality, Yishayahu (Isaiah) chapter 53 directly follows the theme of chapter 52, describing the exile and redemption of the Jewish people. Throughout the Torah, Israel is repeatedly called, in the singular, the “Servant of God,” including several times in Yishayahu itself. For example, see Yishayahu 41:8-9 “But you, O Israel, My servant, Jacob, you whom I have chosen, offspring of Abraham who loved Me…and to whom I shall say: ‘You are my servant’ – I have chosen you and not rejected you.”
When read correctly in Hebrew, Yishayahu 53 clearly refers to the Jewish people being “bruised, crushed and sent as sheep to the slaughter” at the hands of the nations of the world. These descriptions are used throughout the Torah (Bible), such as in Tehilm (Psalms) chapter 44, to graphically describe the suffering and rejection of the Jewish people, but do NOT refer to any suffering or rejection of the Mashiach. And painfully, many generations of Jews got to personally experience what it means to be “sent as sheep to the slaughter.”

“17 Messiah would be declared the Son of God. Psalm 2:7 Matthew 3:16-17”
This verse is referring to King David. Kind David is the author of the Psalm, and he is clearly writing about himself, “Hashem said to me, You are My son…” Also see Shmuel (Samuel) II, 7:14, where King Solomon is also referred to as a son of G-d. Even the Jewish people are often referred to in the Torah as the children of G-d – see of example Devarim (Deuteronomy) 14:1, “You are children of Hashem, your G-d.” In reality, neither King David nor King Solomon nor the rest of us are physical children of G-d as G-d is not even physical. But G-d views us all as His children and we view G-d as our Father. For more examples, see Tehilim (Psalms), 103:13 and 68:6; Iyov (Job), 29:16; Mishlei (Proverbs), 3:12; Malachi, 2:10; Pirkei Avos (Ethics of our Fathers), 3:24; Ahava Rabah Prayer; Avinu Malkeinu Prayer; Shemone Esrei Prayer.
As with my article, the goal here is not to criticize the followers any other religion or philosophy. Rather, I am just providing a small glimpse into why the vast majority of Jews have not accepted Jesus as our Mashiach. I hope everyone can continue to respect the rights of others to their religious perspective. Sadly, way too many lives have been taken away in the “name of religion.” Wishing peace upon all people of all faiths!

      • Hi,

I thanks for your answer. It is a long post so I need to go over it later it much detail, but for now can you tell me if you agree with these prophecies or if you do not agree with these 6 short prophecies

        prophecy

        Psalm 41:9
9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

Jesus quoted this prophecy in the Gospel

        John 13:18
18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
        ————————————————————-
        Psalm 22:7-8
7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

        Fulfilled:

        Matthew 27:41-43
41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

God inspired prophet Isaiah to prophecy about Christ. For example in chapter 53

        Isaiah 53:12
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Jesus also quoted this prophecy also in the Gospel

        Luke 22:37
37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

Prophecy: Micah 5:2 (5:1 in the Jewish Bible)

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.”

        Fulfillment: Matthew 2:1

“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem

        Prophecy: Isaiah 7:14

“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”

        Fulfillment: Matthew 1:18, 22-23

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit . So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which is translated, ‘God with us.'”

    • Also my frend,

just adding one thing else just wondering to know, if you reject
Prophecy: Isaiah 7:14 saying “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”

If you reject this was Christ, then by all means you are waiting for someone in present day Isreal, a virgin girl to have a child, is that correct? because if you deny Jesus fulfilled this spoken by the Prophet Isaiah, then do you think or are you hoping someone today under netanyahu or potentially some other prime minister for a virgin girl to be with child?

      • As I mentioned in my previous comments, most of the English quotes you are providing are not accurate depictions of the Hebrew text or context, as found consistently in our Torah (Bible) scrolls for the past 3,300 years.
Yishayahu (Isaiah) 7:14 uses the Hebrew term עַלְמָה, which means “young woman” and does not use the Hebrew term בְּתּוּלָה, which would have meant virgin. And the verse is not even referencing the Mashiach (Messiah) at all. Furthermore, the popular 1st century Pagan concept of gods impregnating women is counter to all Jewish teachings.
And yes, Jews are still waiting for the Mashiach, along with the utopian society he is prophesied to bring with him (although we are definitely not waiting for a virgin birth).
May that ultimate time of a true and lasting world peace be upon us soon!

      • OK so if We place young women in place of virgin ( even thoe I thought the other scholars said something else) we get

7:14 saying “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”

So if you place virgin with young women then this means the Lord will give you a sign of a young women with child and call his name emmanuel this is what your saying. We know Jesus was called emmanuel and since you reject that, this means you don’t believe it happened yet, there fore this needs to happen according to your beliefs before Jesus comes back which means under the currect Isreal primeminister there could be some young women in isreal to call her child emmanual. So my question now is, are you waiting for a young women to be on the news with a child who’s name will be emmanuel still then?

        • Steve – It still appears that you are not reading my previous comments. As I mentioned earlier, it is clear from the Hebrew and the context that Yishayahu (Isaiah) 7:14 is not referring to the Mashiach (Messiah) at all. Rather, it follows the warning to King Achaz of the pending invasion of the northern kingdom. When Achaz expressed doubts, Yishayahu provided a sign that a young woman (Achaz’s own wife) would have a son and she would call him Immanuel. The sign was significant because it was to take place imminently, so that Achaz could verify it (not some distant Messianic vision).
So to answer your question, we are not waiting for a young woman to call her son Immanuel. First, King Achaz’s wife already called her son that. Second, the verse was not referring to the Mashiach at all.
So yes, the Jews are still waiting for the the Mashicah. But his arrival is not destined to come with a virgin birth, nor specifically through a young woman, nor does he need to be named Immanuel, nor does he need to have any connection with the Prime Minister of Israel.
However, the Mashiach will need to meet the many criteria that are specifically and clearly mentioned in the Torah (bible) about the coming of the Mashiach, including the many examples I have provided in my article, which unfortunately have not yet occurred.

        • Thank you Rabbi Bryks for your clear and compelling explanations!

        • I am reading and consulting with other sources right now because the news I am hearing is very new stuff to me. Please allow me some time to formulate and gather data before I post

          Thank you Rabbi

        • Thank you David for the vote of confidence and than you Steve for the update!
Please don’t feel compelled to post. I am not looking to change you or to encourage conversion to Judaism in any way. Rather, this article is a reply to Joanne’s question explaining why the vast majority of Jews never accepted Jesus as the Mashiach (Messiah).
